Beer #122 – May 4, 2010: Goose Island Oatmeal Stout

July 5, 2010

Beer: Goose Island Oatmeal Stout

Brewery: Goose Island Brewery, Chicago, Illinois

Style: Oatmeal Stout

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle – Bottled on 3/1/10

Price: $9.99 / six-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass Mug

Strength: 5.1% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Roasted and creamy, nice body without being too heavy… very drinkable and enjoyable.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep walnut-black hue with a big, creamy, billowy, tan head

Aroma: Sweet, roasted, creamy aroma

Mouthfeel: Medium, slightly creamy body with tiny bubbles of carbonation

Taste: A cola and creme brûlée sweetness followed by roasted notes and a nutty char, and a mineral-laden finish.   There is little of the chocolate and coffee flavors typically associated with stouts, but instead, much more roasted flavor and creaminess.  It makes for a nice change of pace, and a rather tasty brew.

Pairing: Ribs: fall-off-the-bone barbeque baby-back or tender no-knife-needed short ribs would compliment the roasted notes nicely.

Trivia: Enjoy this one if you can find it… apparently, this brew will no longer be available in a bottles, and only occasionally at their brewpubs.  With a March date on the bottle, and this announcement in April, I may have drank one of the very last bottles!
