Brewery: Hair of the Dog Brewery, Portland, Oregon

Style: Barleywine

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $4.99 / bottle

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Pilsner Glass (should have gone for the brandy snifter though)

Strength: 10.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: A totally unique and delicious slow-sipper.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Hazy, red-chestnut hue with a thin, white head

Aroma: Sweet maple and cognac with a touch of green apple

Mouthfeel: Slightly thick, syrupy with a slightly fizzy carbonation.

Taste: This one starts with a maple syrup sweetness and earthy notes of oak, followed by tart green apple.  A warming note of alcohol reminiscent of cognac comes forward, with an herbal, slightly spicy, hop finish.

Pairing: The best blue cheese you can find… great beer deserves great cheese (and vice-versa)!

Trivia: Fred was created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt, a local celebrity in his hometown and craft beer mecca of Portland, Oregon.
