Beer #116 – April 28, 2010: Cane & Ebel

July 2, 2010

Beer: Cane & Ebel

Brewery: Two Brothers Brewing, Warrenville, Illinois

Style: Rye Beer (the label says “Brewed with rye and Thai palm sugar”)

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle – Best by 6/6/10

Price: $11.99 / six-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 7.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Not for the faint-of-heart (or faint-of-palate)… complex, spicy, and starts off aggressively bitter, though mellows out somewhat.  Definitely a unique brew.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep walnut hue with a frothy, off-white head

Aroma: Pine sap and mild citrus

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Taste: An initial molasses sweetness transforms into a tangy middle of sourdough, grapefruit and pine sap.  An acerbic finish of walnut shell and lemon rind is aggressively hoppy and in-your-face bitter.  However, the bitterness mellows as I drink more, and a slightly spicy rye comes forward.  It takes some warming up to, but in the end, is well worth trying for a tasty but unusual brew.

Pairing: Honestly, I’m a bit stumped on this one…

Trivia: Rather than Cain and Abel, we have Cane (sugar cane) and Ebel (the last names of the two brothers who own and run the brewery).

Either there are not that many beers available in many stores by us, or somehow we are just on the same brainwave. I just picked up a two brothers sample pack today at Costco. Granted I think you may be trying many more beers than I am, but we seem to be on the same wavelength.
