July 2, 2010

Beer: Stoudts Karnival Kolsch

Brewery: Stoudts Brewing Company, Adamstown, Pennsylvania

Style: Kolsch

Serving Type: 12 oz draught

Price: $5.00 / glass

Availability: Spring seasonal

Glassware: Shaker pint

Strength: 4.8% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Clean, refreshing, and tasty.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale but rich straw-yellow, crystal clear, with a creamy, thin, white head.

Aroma: Noble hops and Springtime flowers

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a creamy, fizzy, full carbonation.  Best mouthfeel of any Kolsch I’ve tried.

Taste: Clean, crisp, light honey and clover sweetness with slight lemon notes.  Grassy notes emerge from the hops, with a slightly bitter finish. Straightforward, approachable and enjoyable.

Pairing: German-style beer deserves German cuisine… say, a lightly-fried schnitzel over a bed of buttered spaetzle

Trivia: Carol Stoudt, brewmaster of Stoudts Brewing Company, was the first female brewmaster in the U.S. according to this article from NPR.
