Beer #111 – April 24, 2010: Z Smoked Amber Lager

June 3, 2010

Beer: Z Smoked Amber Lager

Brewery: Fort Collins Brewing Company, Fort Collins, Colorado

Style: Rauchbier

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $9.99 / six-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass Mug

Strength: 5.4% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: While I personally love smoked beers, they are not to every beer drinker’s liking.  I find this one to be very tasty and drinkable with a moderate but not overwhelming smoky flavor.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Slightly hazy red-amber hue with a foamy white head.

Aroma: Sweet caramel with a hint of smoke.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body with a medium-light carbonation.

Taste: An initial taste of sweet caramel with a hint of smoke, a little grainy, then builds into a moderately smoked, woody middle with notes of applewood bacon, all finishing with a slight char.

Pairing: Smoky beer with hints of bacon means this is great with either brunch or barbeque.

Trivia: Rauchbier in German literally means “smoke beer”.  Maybe I should have held onto this one until the finale of LOST… a smoke beer for the smoke monster.  Sure beats 30 year old Dharma beer in a can!
