Beer #109 – April 22, 2010: Ubu Ale

May 19, 2010

Beer: Ubu Ale

Brewery: Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Lake Placid, New York

Style: English Strong Ale

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $8.49 / six-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 7.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: A pretty nice, interesting dark brew… not as complex or flavorful, but much more approachable than yesterday’s Arrogant Bastard Ale of a similar style.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Opaque dark walnut hue with a massive, foamy, cream-colored head

Aroma: Sweet and spicy, like dark molasses sprinkled with fresh-ground pepper.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with spritzy carbonation.

Taste: As suggested by the aroma, this beer starts with a bootstrap molasses earthy sweetness melding into a spicy peppery middle and slighlty drying and tangy finish.  The peppery notes meld nicely with the sharp bubbles of carbonation.

Pairing: Try a pepper-crusted burger topped with cheddar straight from the grill.

Trivia: This beer comes with a presidential seal of approval: after some White House interns enjoyed Ubu Ale at the Lake Placid Pub while accompanying Hillary Clinton who was touring New York State in preparation for her campaign for Senate, they decided to bring some beer back to President Clinton.  Bill enjoyed the beer so much that he ordered Ubu Ale for a White House party.
