Beer #108 – April 21, 2010: Arrogant Bastard Ale

May 19, 2010

Beer: Arrogant Bastard Ale

Brewery: Stone Brewing Company, Escondito, California

Style: American Strong Ale

Serving Type: 750 ml bottle

Price: $4.49 / bottle

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 7.2% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Extremely flavorful in your face brew… I find it very enjoyable, but it’s not every imbiber’s cup of tea pint of ale!

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Clear red-chestnut hue with frothy, cream-colored head and lots of lacing.

Aroma: Grassy, earthy, piney hops

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Taste: Initial malty, caramel, nutty sweetness followed by syrupy and tangy floral honey and grassy hop flavors.  There is a lingering pause before finishing with assertively bitter pine tar flavors, tea-bag tannins and citrusy and puckering grapefruit rind notes.  It leaves a dryness in the back of my mouth with a faint flavor of meyer lemon on my tongue.

Pairing: Sweet and tangy (BBQ sauce and vinegar) slow-cooked pulled pork

Trivia: While there were a variety of different caps on the bottles of Arrogant Bastard, the one I picked up not only describes this beer, but possibly the meaning behind the name: “Hated by many, loved by few”
