Beer #107 – April 20, 2010: Sinebrychoff Porter

May 19, 2010

Beer: Sinebrychoff Porter

Brewery: Sinebrychoff Brewery, Kerava, Finland

Style: Baltic Porter

Serving Type: 11.2 oz bottle

Price: $3.99 / bottle

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 7.2% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Rich, tasty and warming.  A great nightcap beer.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Inky black with a creamy, frothy, cappuccino-colored head

Aroma: Dark chocolate with fruit notes of black cherry and Port

Mouthfeel: Slightly oily-slick body with a lightly fizzy carbonation

Taste: Initial flavors of semisweet 85% dark chocolate and bitter and savory cocoa powder, followed by toffee and raisin middle, slightly chalky, all finishing with warming notes of Port and cognac.

Pairing: Trader Joe’s 73% Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds

Trivia: I first had the pleasure of trying this beer a few years ago at Cafe D’Alsace, the first restaurant in New York City to have a beer sommelier.  Avi Turgeman, the beer sommelier, presented the Sinebrychoff Porter to me with a rich chocolate dessert.  An amazing pairing, and a memorable meal.
