Beer #106 – April 19, 2010: Smuttynose Robust Porter

May 19, 2010

Beer: Smuttynose Robust Porter

Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Style: American Porter

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $8.99 / six-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 5.7% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: A great porter for grilled foods… full of roasted flavor without the sweet chocolate and coffee flavors of many other porters.  Tasty and flavorful.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Nearly black with a huge frothy tan head

Aroma: Roasty with herbal hoppy notes

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a somewhat low carbonation

Taste: This porter starts with a molasses and baked bean earthy sweetness, followed by a roasted middle that is rich without being chocolety like many other rich porters.  The finish is moderately bitter, and relatively hoppy: a very American take on a porter.

Pairing: Pairs great with a grilled burger seasoned with smoky cumin and fresh ground pepper

Trivia: I had initially thought that the seal on the label was a “smuttynose”, but it is, in fact, a common harbor seal.  The name of the brewery comes from Smuttynose Island, located off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine, relatively near to the brewery in Portsmouth.
