Beer #96 – April 9, 2010: Magic Hat Vinyl

April 23, 2010

Beer: Magic Hat Vinyl

Brewery: Magic Hat Brewing Company, Burlington, Vermont

Style: Vienna Lager

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle – Best Before End of April 2010

Price: $7.99 / six-pack

Availability: Spring Seasonal for 2010

Glassware: Glass Mug

Strength: 5.1% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: A very tasty, malty brew.  While Magic Hat has some solid beers in its regular lineup, I’ve honestly been disappointed by some recent Magic Hat seasonals and one-off brews.  However, this one is a keeper, and I hope it comes back again next Spring.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Clear coppery hue with medium foamy white head

Aroma: Sweet, malty, caramel aroma with a slight hop note

Mouthfeel: Medium body, moderate carbonation

Taste: The initial iced tea sweetness is followed by a toasted walnut middle.  A lingering caramel sweetness is in contrast with a mild roasted coffee bitterness in the finish.

Pairing: Traditional red sauce and cheese pizza is actually a tough food to pair well with a beverage, whether wine or beer, but Vinyl is a great match here.

Trivia: Check under the cap when you open any Magic Hat brew… you’ll find a bit of wisdom, humor, or just plain nonsense…

I share your dissapointment in some of the more recent seasonal brews from Magic Hat. I have actually steered clear of this one because of that. However, having read your review I may grab some now!
