April 22, 2010

Beer: Kapittel Watou Pater Ale

Brewery: Van Eecke Brewery, Watou, Belgium

Style: Belgian Dark Ale

Serving Type: 11.2 oz bottle

Price: Unknown – part of a mixed gift pack.

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Goblet

Strength: 6.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Very smooth, and while a bit rich, has no harsh flavors

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pours a deep, hazy, ruby-chestnut hue with a thin white head.

Aroma: Chocolate, raisin, with a touch of port.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin with light carbonation.

Taste: An initial mild Bosco-syrup sweetness is followed by a middle with flavors of plump raisins and both dried dark cherries and sweet maraschino cherries.  While there is a very slight bitterness to the finish, a mild buttery flavor smooths over the taste throughout.

Pairing: Raisinettes might be tasty, but a little redundant.

Trivia: Watou, home of the Van Eecke brewery, is well-known for its hop farms… you can’t get much more local ingredients than that!
