Beer #92 – April 5, 2010: Blue Smoke Original Ale

April 8, 2010

Continuing with the baseball theme, I’m enjoying today’s beer at the home opener for my favorite team, the New York Mets.

Beer: Blue Smoke Original Ale

Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, New York

Style: ESB (Extra Special Bitter)

Serving Type: 16 oz draught

Price: $7.50 at Citi Field

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Plastic Cup

Strength: Unknown

Drinkability: Much better than the neighboring tap (see photo)!

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Reddish-amber hue with a thin white head.

Aroma: Sweet, touch of caramel, mild herbal / citrus hop notes.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation.

Taste: Initial sweet caramel, with a malty, doughy biscuit middle, and a moderately hoppy finish that seems to be a blend of earthy, grassy British hops and citrusy American hops.  A little distracting to try to take notes during a ballgame, particularly Mets Opening Day, but overall, a flavorful alternative to the mass-market lagers on tap or in cans throughout the stadium, but not overly complex or heavy, so quite enjoyable for a beer at a ballgame.

Pairing: I initially tasted this with the pulled pork sandwich from the Blue Smoke stand, and thought it was an o.k. pairing.  Then, I dipped my sandwich into the smokey and spicy Blue Smoke BBQ sauce, and realized the sauce not only kicked-up my sandwich a few notches, but did wonders for the beer pairing as well.

Trivia: In addition to Brooklyn Lager which can be found in cans at several locations throughout Citi Field (home of the New York Mets), Brooklyn Brewery has four specialty beers on-tap at four different Danny Meyer concession stands in the park: Shackmeister Ale at the Shake Shack; Sabroso Ale at El Verano Taqueria; Blanche de Queens at Box Frites; and Blue Smoke Original Ale at Blue Smoke.  I’ll hopefully be enjoying one of these at my next trip to Citi Field in June…
