Beer #77 – March 21, 2010: Anchor Porter

March 22, 2010

Beer: Anchor Porter

Brewery: Anchor Brewing Company, San Francisco, California

Style: Porter

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $7.99 / six-pack

Availability: Year-Round

Glassware: Glass Mug

Strength: 5.6% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Dark, with substance, but still balanced enough to enjoy with a backyard barbeque on a warm Spring day.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Nearly black with a frothy, sand-colored head.

Aroma: Cocoa powder with a touch of jam.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, with a fizzy, foamy carbonation.

Taste: Initial caramel and cocoa flavor, with hints of jammy dark fruit and port in the middle.  A slightly drying finish, a touch of herbal hops, with just a slight charred note.

Pairing: While my photo shows this with a hot dog off the grill, given the dark malts and slight char, it actually pairs even better with other grilled meats, like ribs and burgers.

Trivia: Fritz Maytag purchased the Anchor Steam Brewery in 1965 just before it was about to close its doors forever.  Maytag took a brewery on the brink, re-crafted its signature “Steam Beer” offering, and soon became one of the founding fathers of the craft beer movement in America.  Beyond the world of beer, the Maytag name is well known in the world of appliances and blue cheese.
