Beer #57 – February 26, 2010: Brew Free or Die IPA

February 26, 2010

Beer: Brew Free or Die IPA

Brewery: 21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, California

Style: IPA (India Pale Ale)

Serving Type: 12 oz can

Price: $9.99 / 6-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass Mug

Strength: 7.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Nice citrus and pine hop flavor, with enough bitterness to balance the malty body, without being harsh or acerbic.  A hop-forward but balanced and full-bodied IPA… very drinkable… coming from a can is just an added “wow” factor!

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Hazy orange-amber with a relatively thin, frothy white head.

Aroma: Like a park in Florida: green grass, pine trees, and a hint of citrus grove.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with lots of tiny bubbles of carbonation that give a creamy and full mouthfeel.

Taste: My first impression is of a very strong initial tangerine and grapefruit flavor typical of certain species of Pacific Northwest hops.  As I drink, an initial cereal grain sweetness comes through (sort of like a bowl of Wheaties), while the middle continues to have a strong citrus presence, with a notes of pine tree and a little creaminess.  The finish is moderately bitter, but not a harsh or lingering bitterness, with a little buttery toast flavor coming through.  Citrus, cereal and toast… sounds like breakfast to me!

Pairing: 21st Amendment has a brewpub / restaurant in San Francisco.  A bowl of their chili or beer & cheese soup both sound like tasty accompaniments to their IPA.

Trivia: The namesake of this brewery, the 21st Amendment, should be among the favorite constitutional amendments of all beer lovers.  This amendment was the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, which ended a run of 14 “dry” years in the United States.  When Franklin Roosevelt signed the amendment into law, he apparently said to his staff, “I think this would be a good time for a beer!”
