Beer #56 – February 25, 2010: Mad Hatter IPA

February 25, 2010

Beer: Mad Hatter IPA

Brewery: New Holland Brewing Company, Holland, MI

Style: IPA (India Pale Ale)

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle

Price: $10.99 / 6-pack

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Glass mug

Strength: 5.8 % ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: Relatively lighter body and clean, crisp flavor along with under 6% alcohol means this is an easier-to-drink IPA than some others I’ve sampled.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy coppery-orange hue with a huge, overflowing, frothy, off-white head.

Aroma: Herbal, grassy hops with a touch of caramel.

Mouthfeel: Moderate body with tiny bubbles of carbonation.

Taste: Initial mild caramel sweetness moves into a savory middle with literally a rainbow of flavors: black tea, green grass, red kale and a hint of lemon peel.  A mild bitterness begins to build with notes of chicory and peppery arugula, with a touch of caramel lingering in the finish.

Pairing: A mesclun salad with blue cheese and walnuts.

Trivia: While Michigan is famous for breakfast cereal (home to Kelloggs and General Mills) another grain-based product is making waves in this state: BEER!  A plethora of great craft breweries call Michigan home: New Holland, Founders, Bell’s, Jolly Pumpkin, Kuhnhenn, Dragonmead and more.
