Beer #36 – February 5, 2010: Uerige Sticke Altbier

February 5, 2010

Beer: Uerige Sticke Altbier

Brewery: Obergärige Hausbrauerei GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany

Style: Altbier

Serving Type: 330 ml (11.2 oz) bottle

Price: $3.49/ bottle

Availability: Year-round

Glassware: Dimple mug

Strength: 6.0% ABV (alcohol by volume)

Drinkability: While the surprising slightly sour tang and bitterness makes this a little harsh in flavor, this is contrasted by the extremely smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Hazy, mahogany hue, with a big, frothy, meringe-like off-white head.

Aroma: Sweet caramel malt with an herbal tinge.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, foamy and smooth with a moderate carbonation.

Taste: Starts with a buttery caramel flavor (think caramel corn) with hints of cinnamon and cocoa powder, moving into an earthy, woody, herbal middle, as a tanginess builds.  The finish has slightly sour citrus notes, with a moderate peppery charred bitterness.

Pairing: Grilled meat with a good sear and slight char.

Trivia: Believe it or not, beer is apparently not the beverage of choice on Super Bowl Sunday.  On the list of top ten most popular foods served, soft drinks, milk and tea make the top 10, but beer is nowhere to be seen.  Maybe Tetley and Lipton should be taking the place of Bud and Miller in the commercial wars this year.  For the full article, click here.
